This web site is an initiative of Sylvain BAUDOIN, engineer from Ecole Centrale de Lyon, one of the top 10 engineering Grande Ecole (may be compared to university) in France. The goal of this web site is to possibly fill big lacks of the Internet. It is quite easy to find tools and programs for Linux or Windows but as soon as one wants to manipulate them in an advanced way, or simply understand how they do work, it is very difficult to find (good) documentation on the Internet, and even more difficult to find practical examples. The name of this web site (The manual Page) comes from the Unix manual pages: on Unix systems, whenever you want to know how to use a command, you use what we call the manual pages. They are very usefull, everything is in, but it is often tough to understand them or find in what you want, and then to use the function to achieve your goal. In July 2000 I then decided to create this web site and to put in all I know about computer science, networking and telecommunication, while trying to give practical examples and understandable explanations. I always try to give information for all kind of levels. thus, things are tackled by the following way: a first general study, but that contains essential data. This to allow everybody to understand the subject and have a good overview. Then, for those who want further details, there are other pages and links with more technical details, for instance, I describe frames of protocols and how to use them. |
